I dunno. What do you want to do? What can you do? Wink

I'm going to have to postpone working on the Enoki* Engine (the core of the game that assembles all the images an makes them move, etc) until my computer is at a working state, or at least until I've rescued the files from my hdd. Yes, I'm writing Enoki from scratch. No opengl or anything. When it's done, we'll be able to write the game without doing any programming at all. (Basically, the programming will be generic for any game imaginable. We can make a completely new game, or sequel, without changing a single line of code.)


*For those of you wondering, yes, I named the game engine after a variety of japanese mushroom that sounds cool. Mostly it's just a random name. For those of you not wondering, enokitake.

Yes, well, I do agree with you. I was just joking about "Spawn of Paul" And anyway, slight religious references such as "demons" I can accept, but what I'm saying is I don't want a major religion-based plot or subplot. And spiritual entities do not imply religion. Well, sort of.

Or like, game government based on real-life Christianity. (Sorry Adriel) I just think it's kind of unnecessary, and sort of cheap by using real life religion as a plot.

first of all, I was gonna create a whole new religion with similar roots.

secondly, didn't i tell you that the plot is defeating a tyrant and the subplot is to restore peace and good will to people controlled by demonic beings(all this with the help of religious artifacts and guidance (such as holly weapons,powers , guardian summons, etc.)).

and lastly, it's alright if you don't like my previous suggestions because it's fun when your creativity and imagination is being challenged( beats working on everyday monotonous hw) Laughing
)

PS: the odd format of my response is my practice on organizing my coding...

Story and art, por favor Wink And maybe some tech support too.... Maybe you can help with managing the autoupdates? I just wrote a plugin for the game engine that lets it update itself from the internet.

The engine supports plugins that it can run, called Enoki Utilities. They are .uti files. So far, I've made three:
newfile.uti [to make a new save file]
getfile.uti [to download files from the game server]
updsrv.uti [to update the game files to the latest version]

I'll give you a program sometime called "runuti" that lets you run plugins as programs. You just type the name of the uti file, without the extension, and any parameters. (For example, to use getfile.uti, the name is "getfile" and the parameters are "[remote file] [local file]"

Hmmm? The update module is done, it uses the getfile plugin I already made. Getfile uses WinInet, part of the windows API. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa383630%28VS.85%29.aspx. The specific command I'm using is

I think I put a more detailed explanation of exactly how the updsrv plugin worked in another path of the forum, but I don't remember where. Maybe I just imagined it?

Ok, thanks. I'm fine with just using the windows api, it's not like I'm going to compile for anything else. (Although, FreeBASIC does have an option to compile for xbox.... Not tha I have one...)

Wow. . . FreeBASIC is like standard BASIC on steriods

And if it compiles to machine code then it even has the execution speed advantages of compiled languages

Yes, it does compile to machine code. There's even an option from the command line to leave at as asm code, instead of then compiling it to an executable. Halo Der < random face

I have finished the launcher and updater. The game has been converted from using bmp's to png's to save space and enable better quality transparency. The conversion allows the files to be approximately 98% smaller. I now have a method for embedding images, text, and sound directly into the exe's, without external files. With compression, the file size is still relatively small.
