I had good experiences with parallax kits, may want to start there...
Basically you connect a serial cable somehow (there are different ways) and program it to do what you want. For parallax I believe the language used was PBASIC

I can't get my microcontroller (I just remembered I've had one for a few years) to connect to the computer. It, for some reason, uses a IR interface. It's really hard to get it to connect. I've never been able to program it because I think in all the times I've tried, it's only ever connected once.
