Hacker
hacker
[originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe]
1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.
2. A person who delights in having an intimate understanding of the internal workings of a system, computers and computer networks in particular.
3. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.
4. A person capable of appreciating hack value.
5. A person who is good at programming quickly.
6. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in ‘a Unix hacker’. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)
7. An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example.
8. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.
9. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence password hacker, network hacker. The correct term for this sense is cracker.

Even hackers hate macs so much that they won't bother coding for it.Unchained wrote:Maybe because nobody bothers to hack macs?

Re: Hacker
Actually, I think that it may be because that definition was older, but more current than furniture maker definition, and referred to non-computer things, perhaps the reason that the word came to it's more current usage. It does say that the correct term for that is 'cracker' and I know 'cracker' is used to refer to what that definition would have it refer to in a computer sense. Or rather 'crackers' is the correct term for what most people call 'hackers.'

Re: Hacker
Only white people can be hackers? Haha jk but I got it now, its because the term has been replaced by "cracker"

I love how you think that delicious snack foods are racially offensive.
Anyway, Brad, you're just as light-skinned as I am.

Re: Hacker
It's interesting that often (probably always) a cracker will call himself a hacker and hackers will resent it.

Re: Hacker
Yeah. I remember when hacker used to be a good, complimenting term. (Ok, no I don't, but it once was.)
